Deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, is a nucleic acid polymer made of two polynucleotide chains that form a double helix. It carries genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth and reproduction of all known organisms and many viruses. Its nucleotides contain adenine, thymine, cytosine or guanine, whose sequence encodes genetic information. In eukaryotic cells, most DNA is stored in the nucleus within chromosomes.
