Halley's Comet, officially designated 1P/Halley, is the only known short-period comet consistently visible to the naked eye from Earth. It returns to the inner Solar System roughly every 74 to 79 years, last appearing in 1986 and expected again in mid-2061. Its returns have been recorded since at least 240 BC. In 1986, spacecraft including ESA's Giotto studied the comet in detail, providing data on its nucleus, coma, tail, and surface.
