  • Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The British Rail Class 85, also designated AL5, was an electric locomotive class designed and built at British Rail's Doncaster Works in the early 1960s. Developed for the West Coast Main Line electrification programme, it was one of five prototype classes, Classes 81 to 85. The class became a reliable London Midland Region locomotive after 1970s refurbishment. Withdrawals began in the mid-1980s, and one example was preserved.
