  • Greek Mythology

Argos is Odysseus's faithful dog in Homer's Odyssey. Bred as a hunting dog, he is neglected after Odysseus leaves for the Trojan War and is presumed dead. When Odysseus returns to Ithaca twenty years later in disguise, Argos recognizes him but Odysseus cannot acknowledge him. Argos dies after seeing his master return. The episode has been interpreted as a symbol of faithfulness and of the decline of Odysseus's household.
