The Andromeda Galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy, cataloged as Messier 31, M31, and NGC 224. It is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way and the largest Local Group member by extension. About 2.5 million light-years from Earth, it is visible to the naked eye on moonless nights. The Milky Way and Andromeda have about a 50% chance of colliding within the next 10 billion years.
