Luteal phase

The luteal phase is the last phase of the menstrual cycle, occurring after ovulation. It is characterized by increased progesterone and estrogen, decreased follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, development of the corpus luteum, and changes in the endometrial lining that promote implantation. Its length can vary between people and between cycles in one person. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates and menses begins.
