It developed north of French Guiana, crossed the Bahamas and southern Florida, then intensified in the Gulf of Mexico to Category 4 strength before making final landfall near Grand Isle, Louisiana. Betsy caused major storm surge flooding, including levee breaches in New Orleans. Damage totaled roughly $1.43 billion and 81 deaths were reported, primarily in Louisiana.
