Hurricane Betsy was an intense tropical cyclone in September 1965. It developed north of French Guiana, crossed the Bahamas and southern Florida, then intensified in the Gulf of Mexico to Category 4 strength before making final landfall near Grand Isle, Louisiana. Betsy caused major storm surge flooding, including levee breaches in New Orleans. Damage totaled roughly $1.43 billion and 81 deaths were reported, primarily in Louisiana.
