The Orion Nebula, also called Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976, is a diffuse nebula in the Milky Way, located south of Orion’s Belt in the constellation Orion. Visible to the naked eye, it is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. It has been extensively studied for evidence of star and planetary-system formation, including protoplanetary disks, brown dwarfs, and turbulent gas.
