In physics, redshift is an increase in the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation, corresponding to a decrease in frequency. In astronomy and cosmology, it occurs through relative motion, gravity, or the expansion of the universe. Redshift is commonly represented by z and is used in astronomical surveys to study the universe’s large-scale structure. It can shift radiation across broad ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum and also affects gravitational waves.
