Antarctica is Earth's southernmost and least-populated continent, located almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle and surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It contains the geographic South Pole and is largely covered by an ice sheet. It is the coldest, driest, windiest continent and has the highest average elevation. Governed through the Antarctic Treaty System, it supports research, tourism and fishing, while military activity and mining are prohibited.
