Social rejection is the deliberate or accidental exclusion of an individual from a social relationship or interaction. It can involve peers, romantic relationships, or family estrangement, and may be active, such as bullying or ridicule, or passive, such as ignoring someone. Rejection is subjectively experienced and can contribute to loneliness, low self-esteem, aggression, depression, nightmares, insecurity, and sensitivity to future rejection.
