Mamayev Kurgan is a hill and memorial complex overlooking Volgograd, formerly called Stalingrad, in southern Russia. Its Russian name means “tumulus of Mamai”. The complex commemorates the Battle of Stalingrad, fought from July 1942 to February 1943, a Soviet victory over Axis forces on the Eastern Front during World War II. It is dominated by The Motherland Calls statue, which was the world’s largest free-standing sculpture when installed in 1967.
