  • Language Families

The Indo-European languages are a language family with native branches across Europe, the Indian subcontinent, Greater Iran, Armenia and other regions. Eight branches are still spoken, while Anatolian and Tocharian are extinct. The family includes Spanish, Hindustani, English, Portuguese, Bengali, Russian and many other languages. All Indo-European languages descend from the reconstructed prehistoric language Proto-Indo-European. Their comparative study was central to the development of historical linguistics in the 19th century.
