Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor and businessman whose work included the incandescent light bulb, phonograph, electric power distribution and early motion pictures. Born in Milan, Ohio, he grew up in Michigan and had little formal schooling. He worked as a railroad telegrapher before focusing on engineering, developed the Menlo Park research laboratory, and registered 1,093 United States patents. His company later merged with Thomson-Houston Electric Company to form General Electric.
