The Scholars, also translated as The Unofficial History of the Scholars, is a Chinese novel by Wu Jingzi, published in 1750 during the Qing dynasty. Set in the Ming period, it depicts and often satirizes academic scholars, ambitious examination candidates and the imperial examination system. Its loose narrative shifts among a large ensemble of connected characters. The novel was an early major work to use the vernacular style called baihua.
