Cyclopamine, also called 11-deoxojervine, is a naturally occurring steroidal alkaloid and a teratogenic component of corn lily (Veratrum californicum). Consumption of the plant during gestation has been shown to cause birth defects in offspring, including cyclopia. The molecule was named for this effect after cycloptic lambs were observed among Idaho herds in 1957. Cyclopamine interrupts the sonic hedgehog signalling pathway, which is important in early development.
