The Indianapolis 500, commonly called the Indy 500, is an annual automobile race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana. Traditionally held over Memorial Day weekend, it is part of the IndyCar Series, the top level of American open-wheel racing. The inaugural race took place in 1911 and was won by Ray Harroun. Race traditions include a 33-car grid, four-lap qualifying runs, “Back Home Again in Indiana”, and a bottle of milk for the winner.
