Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, known as Caravaggio, was an Italian painter active in Rome for much of his career. Trained in Milan, he became known for realistic observation, dramatic lighting, and tenebrism, a style using bright shafts of light against deep shadow. His work influenced Baroque painting and artists including Rubens, Ribera, Bernini, Velázquez, and Rembrandt. After killing Ranuccio Tomassoni in a brawl, he fled Rome and later died in uncertain circumstances.
