U.S. Route 66, also called U.S. Highway 66, was an original route in the United States Numbered Highway System. Established in 1926, it ran from Chicago through seven states to Santa Monica, California, covering 2,448 miles. It supported westward migration and communities along its path, then declined after Interstate highways diverted traffic. It was removed from the highway system in 1985, while many segments were preserved as Historic Route 66.
