The sperm whale, or cachalot, is a pelagic mammal with a worldwide range. It is the only living member of the genus Physeter and the largest of the toothed whales. Females and young males live in groups, while mature males are generally solitary outside the mating season. The species uses echolocation and vocalization, can dive to 2,250 metres, and is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
