Krypton is a chemical element with the symbol Kr and atomic number 36. A colorless, odorless noble gas, it occurs in trace amounts in Earth’s atmosphere and is chemically inert. It is used in fluorescent lamps, lighting, photography, and high-powered gas lasers. From 1960 to 1983, the metre’s official definition was based on a spectral line of krypton-86.
