The Goliath birdeater, Theraphosa blondi, is a large spider in the tarantula family Theraphosidae. It occurs in northern South America and is described as the world’s largest spider by mass and body length, while the giant huntsman spider has a greater leg span. It is also called the Goliath tarantula or Goliath bird-eating spider. Despite its name, it rarely preys on birds.
