The Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is a large crocodilian native to freshwater habitats across much of sub-Saharan Africa. It occurs in lakes, rivers, swamps and marshlands, and sometimes in brackish or saltwater environments. Adult males are generally larger than females and may exceed 6.1 m in length. An opportunistic apex predator, it eats fish, reptiles, birds and mammals, and is also a relatively social species with a size-based hierarchy.
