The black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) is a highly venomous snake native to parts of sub-Saharan Africa. It lives on the ground and in trees, inhabiting savannah, woodland, rocky slopes and some dense forests. Although its colour ranges from grey to dark brown, its name refers to the inky-black interior of its mouth. It is diurnal, preys on birds and small mammals, and is listed as least concern by the IUCN.
