The Code of Hammurabi is a Babylonian legal text composed around 1753 BC, purportedly by Hammurabi, king of the First Dynasty of Babylon. Written in Old Babylonian Akkadian, its primary copy is inscribed on a basalt stele. The text includes a poetic prologue and epilogue, with conditional laws addressing criminal, family, property and commercial matters. The stele was rediscovered at Susa in 1901 and is now in the Louvre Museum.
