Chichen Itza was a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya during the Terminal Classic period. Located in Tinúm Municipality, Yucatán, Mexico, it was a major focal point in the Northern Maya Lowlands from the Late Classic through the early Postclassic period. Its buildings show central Mexican, Puuc and Chenes architectural influences, which contemporary interpretations largely attribute to cultural diffusion. The ruins are federal property administered by Mexico's INAH.
