An aurora is a natural light display in Earth's upper atmosphere, produced when charged particles from the Sun collide with atmospheric atoms. The collisions excite oxygen and nitrogen, causing light in colours including green, red, and purple. Auroras occur in bands around polar regions and can appear as curtains, rays, spirals, or flickering light. They are called the northern lights in the Arctic and southern lights in the Antarctic. Auroras also occur on other Solar System bodies, brown dwarfs, and comets.
