It is relatively hard, generally off-white, though it can be orange when colourings such as annatto are added, and may have a sharp taste. It is made worldwide and has no Protected Designation of Origin. Cheddar is the most popular cheese in the United Kingdom and the second-most popular in the United States, behind mozzarella.
