Erosion

  • Geological Processes and Concepts

Erosion is the removal of soil, rock, or dissolved material from one place on Earth’s crust and its transport to another, where it is deposited. It differs from weathering because it involves movement. Water, wind, waves, glaciers, groundwater, and mass movements can cause erosion. Although natural, erosion can be greatly accelerated by human activities, contributing to land degradation, reduced agricultural productivity, sedimentation, and damage to infrastructure.
