The Toyota Prius is a car produced by Toyota since 1997 across five generations. It uses Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive, combining an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. The Prius began as a subcompact four-door saloon and has been made as a compact five-door liftback since 2003. It was the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle and first went on sale in Japan in 1997 before its worldwide introduction in 2000.
