The acriflavine resistance protein family includes bacterial transmembrane transport proteins involved in multidrug efflux. In Escherichia coli, acrA and acrB encode a system believed to protect the bacterium from hydrophobic inhibitors. AcrB is powered by proton-motive force and has broad substrate specificity, including antibiotics, disinfectants, dyes, detergents and simple solvents. The ligand-free AcrB transporter is a homotrimer whose subunits each contain 12 transmembrane helices and large periplasmic domains.
