  • Weather Phenomena

Hail is solid atmospheric precipitation consisting of ice balls or irregular lumps called hailstones. It differs from ice pellets, graupel, and snow, and hailstones usually measure from 5 mm to 15 cm in diameter. Hail can form in most thunderstorms when strong upward air motion and suitable freezing-level conditions are present. Large hailstones may damage human-made structures and agricultural crops.
