Beat Radio began as an unlicensed dance music radio station in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded in 1996 by local radio DJ and programmer Alan Freed, its original 97.7 FM station served downtown Minneapolis, nearby neighborhoods, and several suburbs. It operated for 103 days before the Federal Communications Commission shut it down. Beat Radio later moved to licensed stations and became a nationwide radio network.
