Obaysch was a hippopotamus captured on an island in the White Nile before he was one year old. He arrived at London Zoo in 1850 after being exchanged by Abbas Pasha for greyhounds and deerhounds. He drew up to 10,000 visitors a day and became the first hippopotamus seen in Great Britain since prehistoric times. With the female Adhela, he produced surviving offspring in 1872.
