Lamian War

  • Hellenistic Period

The Lamian War, also called the Hellenic War, was a Greek coalition's unsuccessful revolt against Macedonian hegemony after Alexander the Great died. Led initially by Athens and its commander Leosthenes, the Greeks besieged Antipater at Lamia. Macedonian naval and land reinforcements reversed their early successes, and Antipater defeated the coalition at Krannon. Athens surrendered, lost its navy and external possessions, accepted a garrison, and replaced its democracy with an oligarchy.
