Betula papyrifera, commonly called paper birch, American white birch or canoe birch, is a short-lived birch species native to northern North America. Its thin white bark often peels from the trunk in paper-like layers. It is often among the first species to colonize burned areas at northern latitudes and is important for moose browsing. Its wood is used for boltwood, sawlogs, firewood and pulpwood.
