Burundi, officially the Republic of Burundi, is a landlocked country in East Africa, located in the Great Rift Valley. It borders Rwanda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while Lake Tanganyika forms part of its southwestern border. Gitega is the political capital, and Bujumbura is the economic capital and largest city. Burundi became independent in 1962 and is primarily a rural society whose land is largely used for subsistence agriculture and grazing.
