The 1981 San Francisco 49ers season was the franchise's 32nd National Football League season, and its third under head coach Bill Walsh. The team went 13–3 in the regular season, its first winning season in five years, and reached the playoffs for the first time in nine years. Quarterback Joe Montana led a defining NFC Championship Game comeback, including “The Catch” to Dwight Clark. The 49ers then defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 26–21 in Super Bowl XVI.
