Bahrain, officially the Kingdom of Bahrain, is an island country in West Asia, near the western shore of the Persian Gulf. Its archipelago includes 33 natural islands and 50 artificial islands, centered on Bahrain Island. Manama is the capital and largest city. Bahrain became independent from the United Kingdom in 1971 and was declared a semi-constitutional monarchy in 2002. Banking, tourism and oil revenues are important to its economy.
