Yankton is a city and the county seat of Yankton County, South Dakota, United States. It became a city in 1889 and had a population of 15,411 at the 2020 census. The first capital of Dakota Territory, it was named for the Yankton tribe of Western Dakota people. Yankton lies on the Missouri River near Gavins Point Dam, Lewis and Clark Lake, and the James River confluence.
