Japanese ritual suicide by disembowelment
Epic
Seppuku, also called harakiri, is a Japanese form of ritualistic suicide by disembowelment. Originally associated with samurai and their code of honor, it was also practiced by other Japanese people during the Shōwa era. The practice dates to the Heian period and was later associated with honor and used as capital punishment for samurai who had committed serious offenses. Its ceremonial form could be performed before spectators as part of an elaborate ritual.
