Jane Austen was an English writer whose six novels comment on the English landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Her plots often examine women’s dependence on marriage for social standing and economic security. Her anonymously published novels included Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published after her death in 1817. Her novels have frequently been adapted for film and television.
