The Philippines, officially the Republic of the Philippines, is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia in the western Pacific Ocean. Its islands are grouped into Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Manila is the capital, while Quezon City is the most populated city, and both are in Metro Manila. The country became independent in 1946 and is an emerging, developing and newly industrialized country. Its location makes it prone to earthquakes, monsoon rains and typhoons.
