Acrania is a rare congenital disorder in the human fetus in which the flat bones of the cranial vault are completely or partly absent. The cerebral hemispheres develop completely but abnormally. It is frequently, though not always, associated with anencephaly. Diagnostic criteria described in the text include normal facial bones and cervical column, absence of the fetal skull, and brain tissue volume of at least one-third of normal size.
