Monkeypox virus, also called MPV, MPXV, or hMPXV, is a species of double-stranded DNA virus that causes mpox in humans and other mammals. It belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus and is related to variola, cowpox, and vaccinia viruses. The virus has an oval form with a lipoprotein outer membrane. It is endemic in Central Africa, while its exact natural reservoirs remain uncertain.
