Battle of Bitlis

  • World War I

The Battle of Bitlis was a series of engagements in 1916 between Russian Imperial and Ottoman forces for Bitlis and, to a lesser extent, nearby Muş. A Russian corps captured Bitlis in early March, after clashes at Koprukoy, Erzurum and Muş. The Ottoman Second Army retook Bitlis and Muş in August, but Russian forces recaptured both towns later that month. Ottoman casualties were reported as 34,000, with about half prisoners of war.
