A passing loop, also called a passing siding in North America, is a place on a single-line railway or tramway where vehicles travelling in opposite directions can pass. It is commonly located at or near a station and is connected to the main track at both ends. It can also allow overtaking in the same direction when signalling permits. Loop length affects whether trains must stop, slow down, or carry out more complex crossing operations.
