Riding habit

  • Clothing

A riding habit is women's clothing for horseback riding. From the mid-17th century, formal sidesaddle habits commonly included a tailored jacket and matching long skirt, shirt or chemisette, hat, low-heeled boots, gloves, and often a stock tie or cravat. The garments often borrowed details from men's dress and used darker colours. From about 1790 to 1820, a habit could take the form of a riding coat or a petticoat with a short jacket.
