The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is a species of ray-finned fish in the family Salmonidae. It occurs in the northern Atlantic Ocean and rivers flowing into it. Most populations are anadromous, hatching in freshwater, maturing at sea, and returning upstream to spawn. Unlike Pacific salmon, it can survive spawning and repeat the cycle. Landlocked populations live entirely in freshwater. The species is affected by fishing and habitat destruction and is also widely farmed.
